NAU soccer beats Montana 2-1, clinches playoff berth

The Northern Arizona University (NAU) women’s soccer team won its first match of this weekend’s road trip, defeating the University of Montana 2–1 in Missoula, Mont., on Oct. 25. The victory clinched the Lumberjacks a spot in the Big Sky Conference (BSC) playoffs for the first time since the 2010 season.

After a scoreless first half, Montana’s senior defender Courtney Watson scored the first goal of the game in the 55th minute. NAU responded with a goal by sophomore midfielder Nicole Sherwin 18 minutes later. It was Sherwin’s third goal of the 2013 season.

With seven minutes left in regulation, sophomore midfielder Cierra Gamble executed a goal that gave NAU a 2–1 lead that held strong through the rest of the game.

With this win, NAU remains in second place in the BSC with a record of 6–2, and an overall record of 10–4–3 on the season.

The Lumberjacks’ last regular season match will take place on Oct. 27 at Eastern Washington.
