Short Takes: NAU basketball scores amid Skydome chaos
As the closure of the Walkup Skydome stirs controversy and raises questions, it is hard to find the silver lining in what students (especially graduating seniors) perceive to be a very dark cloud. Yet despite all the apparent disadvantages, I believe the NAU men’s and women’s basketball teams may come out as dark horse winners during the Skydome’s closure for renovations. For quite some time, both teams have called the Skydome their home as the turf from football season is rolled up, and the hardwood and two hoops appear. But despite having such a large venue, it is no argument that both teams have a hard time filling the stands to create a competitive environment and home court advantage for the Jacks. With their temporary move to the Rolle Activity Center, both teams will no doubt benefit from the intimate atmosphere. With limited seating that can actually fill to capacity and a lower roof to retain and echo noise, this year’s basketball teams should definitely be rethinking the statement “Dome sweet home.”
