On May 3, the NAU Faculty Senate voted on a resolution condemning Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070 (SB1070), the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, which gives police officers the authority to check the legality of somebody’s presence in the United States, and to arrest those who are not in the country legally. The resolution passed nearly a week after the Flagstaff City Council unanimously voted to fight the law.

The resolution reads:

“The NAU Faculty Senate condemns,  in no uncertain terms, the actions of the Arizona State Legislature and the Governor to enact law(s) that marginalize, criminalize and profile any segment  of our community in the name of controlling our borders.  We also go on record supporting the Flagstaff City Council in seeking legal action to overturn the racist law(s).”

SB1070 is scheduled to go into effect July 28.

I support the NAU Faculty Senate and the Flagstaff City Council in condemning SB-1070. My husband and I are native Arizonians and we love our state.
