Luke Avery and his son Ben bowl together at the Big Brother Big Sister fundraising event at Starlight Lanes. The event took place Saturday, February 27 and ran from 8am to 6pm. Janelle Conlove/ The LumberjackA larger-than-usual crowd packed the Starlight Lanes bowling alley Feb. 27 when Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff (BBBSF) had its annual Bowl for the Kids’ Sake event.

NAU student organizations showed support by taking part in the event. These groups were given a full hour to bowl and raised approximately $40,000 for BBBSF.

The participants of the event were separated into groups, and each group raised at least $250. The exact amount of money raised will not be available until later this week. The average amount for the event is usually $40,000, according to BBBSF.

The winners will get the traveling pin, a wooden pin with the BBBSF logo on it. It is called the traveling pin because the winners keep it for a year until the fundraiser comes around again.

Jen Merrill, the public relations coordinator for the event, said all the proceeds will go directly to the program, which supports children in both the Flagstaff and Williams areas.

Other events to look out for in the coming months are the Spring Picnic and the Mountain High Golf Tournament. The Spring Picnic is May 1 and only bigs (mentors) and littles (kids) can attend.

The Mountain High Golf Tournament is a fundraising event for which anyone can participate and is currently set for May 23.

Anyone who is interested in this organization or would like to have more information can call 774-0649 or visit BBBSF online at bbbsf.com.
