Sept. 12
At 2:31 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Sechrist Hall following the report of a garbage can on fire.
The officer observed smoke coming from a garbage can in the northwest corner of the Sechrist Hall parking lot. There was a little fire inside of the trash can. A bystander had poured water on the fire to contain the flames. The officer ordered all onlookers to stand back until the fire was contained.
Flagstaff Firefighters arrived to the scene and contained the small flames. Firefighters determined the source to be a burning cigarette. Witnesses told the officer they did not see anyone attempt to set the garbage can on fire.
The case is closed due to a lack of leads.
At 7:02 p.m., an officer initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and San Francisco Street.
The driver was traveling eastbound on Franklin Avenue and failed to stop at a stop sign when turning southbound onto San Francisco Street. The officer identified the driver as an 18-year-old male. There were four additional passengers inside the vehicle. The officer ran the driver’s license through dispatch and discovered the license had been suspended due to court action. The driver was placed under arrest and placed in the back of the patrol car. The officers impounded the vehicle.
The officer performed a vehicle inventory and found four 40 oz. alcoholic beverages in a bag located directly behind the driver’s seat. The officer located an unopened Jose Cuervo bottle inside a plastic grocery bag behind the passenger seat. The suspect denied ownership and involvement with both items.
An additional officer continued the vehicle inventory and located a marijuana cigarette and a clear sandwich bag containing a green, leafy substance. The odor from the bag was consistent with the odor of marijuana. The suspect denied possession of the marijuana and attempted to contact two of the four passengers regarding possession. The officer issued a criminal complaint form to the suspect. Evidence was documented and transferred to an evidence locker at NAU Police Department.
The case is closed with a stop sign violation and the adult arrest for driving on a suspended license, minor in possession of alcohol and possession of marijuana.
Sept. 13
At 7:18 a.m., an officer was dispatched to parking lot 11 on campus following a report of a golf cart lying on its side.
The officer located and photographed the golf cart. The owner was identified as a 28-year-old male. The officer contacted the owner and requested his presence at the scene. The owner lifted the golf cart to its upright position. He discovered damage to the battery and battery cables.
The owner told the officer he last saw the golf cart upright in the parking lot on Sept. 12 at 9:30 p.m. He was unable to identify a suspect or a witness. The estimated cost of damage was $50. The owner agreed to assist in prosecution. The officer issued a victim rights waiver.
