The NAU soccer team completed its spring season with three wins in as many games April 23-24. The Lumberjacks disposed of the NAU and ASU women’s club soccer teams and then claimed victory in the annual alumni game to wrap up their spring schedule.

NAU men’s, women’s tennis teams fall in Big Sky final

A second-place finish in the Big Sky regular season led the best of the NAU men’s and women’s tennis teams to the Big Sky Championships in Sacramento, Calif., April 24-25.

The NAU men’s squad defeated the Weber State Wildcats 4-1 to advance to the finals, when they lost to the defending champions, the Sacramento State Hornets, 4-0. The Lumberjack women also won their semi-final match 4-2 over Montana, but they met the same fate as the men by losing 4-0 to the Hornets.

The Lumberjacks produced outstanding results after venturing to instate rival ASU’s headquarters in Tempe to compete at the Sun Devil Open April 24.

Sophomore Patrick Colennelli threw a 164-06 in the men’s discus, overcoming all competition to win the event. Colennelli, previously ranked eighth in the conference, now sits in fourth place.

Football gets glimpse of fall roster at annual spring game

The NAU football team held its spring game at noon April 24 at Coconino High School’s Cromer Stadium. The scrimmage was the team’s last official practice until the Lumberjacks return for camp in August.

“There are obviously things we still need to tighten down and improve on,” said head coach Jerome Souers. “But in 15 practices … I think we progressed the way that we needed to.”

Former NAU running back Alex Henderson signed a free-agent deal with the St. Louis Rams April 24. Henderson will report to the team’s minicamp this upcoming weekend. The three-time All-Big Sky selection will kick off his professional career by vying to be the backup for pro-bowler Steven Jackson. Henderson left NAU as the team’s second-leading rusher for a career with 3,462 yards and is also second in rushing attempts with 677.

After two rounds of championship golf for the Big Sky crown, the NAU golf team is tied for first place with Portland State. As of press time (April 21), the Lumberjacks were sharing the top spot with a 15-over-par team score of 591.

Women’s tennis loses home finale

In their final home and conference match of the season, the women’s tennis team lost 6-1 against Big Sky leader the Sacramento State Hornets April 17. NAU finished its season second in the conference at 7-1 and 12-6 overall. The Hornets secured the top spot in the upcoming Big Sky Championships in Sacramento while NAU enters as the No. 2 seed.

Qualifying, personal-best and career-best times and marks — these results are an unchanging pattern for the NAU track team, and it was no different this weekend. The Lumberjacks took on schools in California April 15 to 17 and returned more than satisfied with their performances.

Olympic dreams are in sight for one of NAU’s track and field team stars: Junior discus thrower Andres Rossini from Argentina is ranked No. 3 in his home country, despite only taking up the sport four years ago.

On March 21, Rossini traveled to Medellín, Colombia for the South American U-23 Championships to compete against the most promising discus throwers.
