Soccer team uses spring, South Fields to tune up
by Stayson Isobe on April 29, 2010
The NAU soccer team completed its spring season with three wins in as many games April 23-24. The Lumberjacks disposed of the NAU and ASU women’s club soccer teams and then claimed victory in the annual alumni game to wrap up their spring schedule.
“We’ve been working out and practicing a lot, so we were all really excited to play some games,” said junior defender Kristi Andreassen. “We’ve had a great spring, and I feel we’ve improved a lot already, and we’re going to hope to keep improving for the…
Full PostPick & Pop: Angela Chalmers headlines NAU Mock Draft 2.0
by Matt McFadden on April 29, 2010
The top-five picks of the NFL Draft went according to plan this past week, as did the top-five of my NAU Mock Draft. But unlike some of the NFL Draft’s shocking selections (I couldn’t stop laughing when I heard Tim Tebow’s name during the first round), none of these second-week picks of the NAU Mock Draft should come as a surprise to anyone. Continuing to the final round: With the sixth pick of the 2010 NAU Draft, The Lumberjack selects…

by Daniel Donnelly on April 29, 2010
A second-place finish in the Big Sky regular season led the best of the NAU men’s and women’s tennis teams to the Big Sky Championships in Sacramento, Calif., April 24-25.
The NAU men’s squad defeated the Weber State Wildcats 4-1 to advance to the finals, when they lost to the defending champions, the Sacramento State Hornets, 4-0. The Lumberjack women also won their semi-final match 4-2 over Montana, but they met the same fate as the men by losing 4-0 to the Hornets.
Tennis coach Kim Bruno said both…

by Deidra Aquah on April 29, 2010
The Lumberjacks produced outstanding results after venturing to instate rival ASU’s headquarters in Tempe to compete at the Sun Devil Open April 24.
Sophomore Patrick Colennelli threw a 164-06 in the men’s discus, overcoming all competition to win the event. Colennelli, previously ranked eighth in the conference, now sits in fourth place.
“It felt really good, and I was really prepared going into this event, despite the entire struggle from the snow,” Colennelli said. “I went into it knowing I was going to have a good day. It’s…
Full PostFootball gets glimpse of fall roster at annual spring game
by Jenna Galloway on April 29, 2010
The NAU football team held its spring game at noon April 24 at Coconino High School’s Cromer Stadium. The scrimmage was the team’s last official practice until the Lumberjacks return for camp in August.
“There are obviously things we still need to tighten down and improve on,” said head coach Jerome Souers. “But in 15 practices … I think we progressed the way that we needed to.”
The game was between NAU’s offense and defense; both units were essentially divided into starters and non-starters. The scrimmage was an opportunity for…
Full PostRams sign Henderson, Jones declares
by Chuck Constantino on April 29, 2010
Former NAU running back Alex Henderson signed a free-agent deal with the St. Louis Rams April 24. Henderson will report to the team’s minicamp this upcoming weekend. The three-time All-Big Sky selection will kick off his professional career by vying to be the backup for pro-bowler Steven Jackson. Henderson left NAU as the team’s second-leading rusher for a career with 3,462 yards and is also second in rushing attempts with 677.
On the hardwood, junior men’s basketball player Cameron Jones declared for the 2010 NBA draft, but he will not…

After two rounds of championship golf for the Big Sky crown, the NAU golf team is tied for first place with Portland State. As of press time (April 21), the Lumberjacks were sharing the top spot with a 15-over-par team score of 591.

In their final home and conference match of the season, the women’s tennis team lost 6-1 against Big Sky leader the Sacramento State Hornets April 17. NAU finished its season second in the conference at 7-1 and 12-6 overall. The Hornets secured the top spot in the upcoming Big Sky Championships in Sacramento while NAU enters as the No. 2 seed.

by Deidra Aquah on April 22, 2010
Qualifying, personal-best and career-best times and marks — these results are an unchanging pattern for the NAU track team, and it was no different this weekend. The Lumberjacks took on schools in California April 15 to 17 and returned more than satisfied with their performances.
“Every week, we just have so many highlights, it becomes really difficult to pinpoint the best and most exciting one,” said Eric Heins, interim director of track and field. “Our athletes consistently produce great sparks all around.”
April 17 was the determinant factor for the…
Full PostStudents should support NAU athletics
by Brett Murdock on April 22, 2010
We’ve all seen them: The throngs of people standing in a certain section to call their own. The people are rowdy, obnoxious, screaming, insulting at times, possibly intoxicated, and a downright joy to be a part of. These seats are called student sections, and every major college program has them. With the exception of NAU.
Now, I don’t know exactly what the problem is that keeps our students from supporting the teams of the school they pay absurd amounts of money to attend; I know there are reasons such as…
Full PostPick & Pop: Mock draft of NAU’s best
by Matt McFadden on April 22, 2010
The NFL draft begins today (April 22), and along with it come many mock drafts, predictions and dreams, all of which will be proven wrong and crushed by sundown. But instead of predicting, or rather, guessing this year’s NFL draft, I have decided to assemble a mock draft of the best athletes to ever put on a Lumberjack uniform (while not using the word “upside”). With the first selection of the 2010 NAU draft, The Lumberjack selects …

Olympic dreams are in sight for one of NAU’s track and field team stars: Junior discus thrower Andres Rossini from Argentina is ranked No. 3 in his home country, despite only taking up the sport four years ago.
On March 21, Rossini traveled to Medellín, Colombia for the South American U-23 Championships to compete against the most promising discus throwers. Rossini proved himself to be one of the best in the world by claiming the title with a personal-best throw of 184 feet, 6.5 inches, which beat the second-place finisher…

Lack of playing time, homesickness and change of scenery — all of these are reasons for someone to transfer schools. For sophomore men’s basketball forward Austin Smith, after a year at Liberty University, he realized Lynchburg, Va., was not for him, and he found himself back in the friendly confines of his home state.
“Redshirting was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” Platt said. “When you come from a program where I played a lot, and then I come here and [do] not even get to see…

by Deidra Aquah on April 15, 2010
The NAU track team looks to hurdle to the conference championships with agility and speed after they proved themselves worthy of competition this past weekend at the Mesa and Sun Angel Classic April 9 and 10.
“Our main goal is to try and claim the win, and for the diverse amount of athletes we have here, it should make for a great show,” said Eric Heins, head coach and interim director of track and field. “Once they find that they achieve one set of goals, they just keep on moving…

by Brandon J. Smith on April 8, 2010
NAU men’s tennis played four matches in the span of a week against New Mexico, Oregon, Weber State and Idaho State; the team dropped three of the four contests.
The week began with a 7-0 loss to New Mexico on March 28. The Lumberjacks, still without injured sophomore Andrew Reiff, were outmatched in all doubles and singles matches.
The Jacks next took the court in Phoenix, facing off against Oregon on April 2, where NAU fell 5-2 to the No. 70-ranked Ducks. Reiff returned to the team but still fell…
Full PostPick & Pop: Sports bring big money
by Matt McFadden on April 8, 2010
I used to think I had sports all figured out. I mean all of them. And no, I’m not talking about understanding how the games are played and knowing which name corresponds with each number on the jerseys; I’m referring to the intricacies of the game — the nooks and crannies, the ins and outs, the what-have-yous.
But I’ve recently realized I don’t have them all down to a science. You see, I used to think sports existed primarily to give fans enjoyment and to give the public something to…
Full PostWalk-on athletes: The long road less traveled
by Jenna Galloway on April 8, 2010
It could be argued many student athletes are paid for their hard work. They do not receive a salary, but scholarship athletes earn varying amounts of aid toward university schooling in return for their athletic talents.
But not every athlete on a team is on scholarship, and many who walk on to collegiate sports teams may never get the chance to play consistently in a game, match or meet. These athletes essentially work for free so their efforts may lead to a scholarship for themselves, and even more importantly, a…
Full PostNon-Sports Guy Sports Column: Cricket is confusing
by Trevor Gould on April 7, 2010
I was bored one day and decided to download the demo for a computer game titled Cricket Revolution. Due to the fact I possessed no cricket knowledge in the slightest, I decided to play the tutorial first to learn the basics. The first thing the game said to me was, “In this lesson, the bowler will attempt to bowl a yorker right into your stumps.” Excuse me … what? I don’t want anyone throwing anything at my stumps. This simple set of directions made me both laugh and scratch my…

Full PostJackChat: Louie the Lumberjack
by Brett Murdock on April 1, 2010
As long as there have been college sports, there have been mascots. At NAU, Louie the Lumberjack reigns supreme. In a rare sit-down interview, The Lumberjack interrogates Louie on some of the more serious questions in the mascot and sports worlds. Unfortunately, all of his answers were grunts, so The LJ did its best to put them into words.
The Lumberjack: When did you decide to become NAU’s mascot?
Louie the Lumberjack: After I learned that I could hang out with the cheer and dance teams.…
Nate Alcorn: The greatest player to never take the field
by Trevor Gould on April 1, 2010
There is a common misconception that talented football players spend the majority of their time on the gridiron. Football prodigies are supposed to undergo hours of lifting, drills and shooting up steroids. Yet there is one pigskin phenomenon who does not need any of that. He spends most of his time behind a desk, editing countless articles and assigning stories to his legions of writers. He is our beloved news editor, Nate Alcorn — the greatest football player to never take the field.
Many would be surprised Alcorn never started…

Despite blistering wind conditions, the NAU football team began their quest for a conference championship with the start of spring practice March 26.
“We looked good [today],” said junior quarterback Michael Herrick. “We came out loose, and things ran a lot smoother than [the] previous first days of spring ball since I’ve been here. I had a lot of fun with the guys, and it felt good to get back out.”
Although the Lumberjacks return Herrick — a second-team All-Big Sky performer and ninth-place finisher for the Walter Payton Award…
