5MM: Friday Faceoffs
by Chris Etling on April 10, 2009 at 12:55 pm under 5 Minute Misconduct
Not much on the horizon this week, other than some fragmented thoughts:
- Nick Adenhart’s death was tragic, as are any accidents involving drunk drivers. The worst part was watching the Angels’ press conference yesterday, with a surprisingly human-looking Scott Boras breaking down, Mike Scioscia seeming to age 10 years in a night, and Adenhart’s father — in town to watch his son pitch six shutout innings the night before — staring into his son’s locker.
- Terrell Owens’ remarks about even Jerry Rice being selfish from time to time ring hollow. TO wishes his career and legacy were anywhere near as pristine as his former counterpart in San Fran.
- The Diamondbacks started the season losing two of three (in embarrassing fashion, no less), but the bigger news is Brandon Webb missing his start tomorrow against the Dodgers. Apparently he’s experiencing some arm trouble, a problem that links back to the end of last season, and allegedly that was the wrench in a 3-year, $54-million contract extension that fell through last summer. Webb has more innings pitched than anyone in the majors since 2005, and it’d be a shame both for fans and the Dbacks’ division hopes this year if he missed any kind of meaningful time.
- In unsurprising news, the Suns are done after Dallas’ blowout of the Jazz the other night. Considering they had to win their final five games and have the Mavericks lose all of theirs, missing the playoffs was inevitable. Shame they couldn’t show up for that game in Dallas last Sunday. Soon to come: sweeping changes? They’re $12 million over the cap for next season if they keep this roster intact, which I can’t fault Robert Sarver one bit for being unwilling to pay.
- Radio show this week as usual, this time with Shaun El-Ters chiming in for some Suns coverage and other assorted thoughts. Eric broke the first half hour of the show, so you’ll have to fast forward past some dead air. Link’s in the usual place, although it’s not up yet — that hiccup at the start may prevent it from posting.
- Your YTSVGMotW: The Mega Man series has stretched across some 40-plus titles over the years, but none of them may ever measure up to Mega Man Soccer. It’s equal parts embarrassing and hilarious.
