5MM: Friday Faceoffs

- Scott Boras looking like an idiot? Check. After Manny turned down 2 years/$45 million from the Dodgers last week, L.A. pulled the offer off the table, saying they’d have to start from scratch…and then Manny ended up accepting almost exactly the same deal this week. At least we can stop hearing about him until Opening Day, when he’ll actually, you know, appear in a Dodgers uniform for the first time.
- Amare Stoudemire is out for the year thanks to setbacks in the recovery from eye surgery, killing off any hopes that he’d be back for the playoffs (assuming the Suns actually make it in, which is a dangerous assumption at this point). Interesting, he’s not even allowed to attend the games, because the risk to his eye is too high. On the plus side, given Amare’s string of bad luck/circumstances the past few years, he won’t be in danger of getting crushed in the first few rows of seats by Shaq.
(Side note: You can’t help but wonder what might have happened if Amare had worn the goggles all season instead of ditching them after seven games. He was wearing them for this game, perhaps his best in a Suns’ uniform.) - The Diamondbacks were destroyed by Team Mexico 19-4 the other day, getting hammered by a lineup that featured four former Diamondbacks: Erubiel Durazo, Rod Barajas, Scott Hairston and the infamous Karim Garcia, who of course was shipped to Detroit for Luis Gonzalez and cash back in 1999. Disturbingly, it was Brandon Webb who was responsible for part of that shelling — but then again, he struggled last spring and things worked out okay during the regular season.
- Eric and I were joined on The Sports Hour this week by sports editor Wade McMillin and assistant sports editor Nate Alcorn, sticking around for the entire two hours. I think I’m actually audible this week, so that’s a plus. The episode should be available here, although at the moment it seems to be just dead air.
- Your YouTube Sports Video Game Moment of the Week: MLB 09: The Show is a very worthy pickup if you’re a baseball fan. Last year’s title was solid as it was, and they’ve made some improvements to the Road to the Show mode. The PS3 version looks fantastic, and you can upload your own walkup music for at-bats, a nice touch (so finally I can have “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel just like Steve Finley). Here’s a look at some of the other minutiae that makes the game great.
