Competitive mountain bikers from all around Arizona and other parts of the country gathered in Estrella, Ariz. on March 9 to compete in the Hedgehog Hustle. This race is one of many this season organized by the Mountain Bike Associate of Arizona (MBAA). The event was team-oriented, and the Flagstaff contingent definitely put up a good showing. While some competitors represented NAU cycling, others raced on the Absolute Bikes team.

Representatives of the Absolute Bikes team included Sue Rawley, Stephanie Hawthorn, Ryan Brunswick, Tess Siemens, Margaret Montfort, Shea Chavez, Eric Pitcher and Tonya Pitcher.

Rawley and Hawthorn grabbed the top two spots in the women’s masters 45-and-up division, with Rawley finished roughly 25 minutes before Hawthorn. Brunswick placed second in the ages 15-18 category for junior men, and Siemens finished first in the equivalent category for females. Montfort, who competed in the women’s 50-and-up race, finished in second place, just two minutes behind the winner. In a separate category for women ages 15-18, Chavez was able to capture first place. Eric Pitcher also placed first in the men’s rock crusher category, while Tonya Pitcher grabbed the top spot in the women’s single speed category.

Among the racers on the NAU cycling team were Kyle Gandy, Connor Dalton and Kevin Reeves. All of them competed in the men’s ages 19-34 category with respectable times. Gandy placed the highest of the trio, coming in 9th. Dalton finished behind his teammate in 12th, and Reeves rounded out the race in 17th place.

The next MBAA race will take place on Saturday, April 6 in Prescott, Ariz. For more information, visit the official MBAA website at http://www.mbaa.net/.
