Gamer is the story of a man named Kable (Gerard Butler) who is falsely accused of murder and is now on death row. In order to get out of his sentence, Kable must survive 30 rounds of Ken Castle’s (Michael C. Hall) “Slayers.”
The plot and characters are a mix between Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Mnemonic with Keanu Reeves. While the plot is anything but new, the symbolism that directors Mark Neveldine and Brain Taylor is an interesting one: Would humans risk other peoples’ lives just to play a game?
While the movie is a decent one at best, the special features are anything but special. “Inside the Game” is an hour and a half of egotistical self promotion. Within five minutes of the feature you will find out that the directors are the same guys who did Crank and that’s all you will hear.
Much of the features are a comparison between what they did with Crank and Gamer, none of it really focuses on any aspects of Gamer.
Overall, this DVD is a rent only. Gamer brings an interesting look at video games and the possible effects they could make, but the special effects are laughable.
