Brothers Gow, one of Flagstaff’s local bands known for their funk, hip-hop, rock and reggae style since their debut in 2007, performed at the Orpheum Theater Jan. 29 to celebrate the release of their new CD, Ponds.
More than 100 fans attended the release party. Most of the songs played at the event were the band’s earlier works, including “Down on My Luck” and “Alley Cat.”
One of the highlights of the party occurred during a new song, “Whud You Call Me?” The crowd became overzealous, chanting “Brothers Gow.” During a solo by lead guitarist and vocalist Kyle Merrill, a fan went on stage and jumped into the screaming crowd.
Tom Linda, a worker at Flagstaff Medical Center, said he became a fan of Brothers Gow when he first heard them at The Green Room.
“I think I first saw a flier about them,” Linda said. “They’re a really jamming band, really tight. They play their own material, and … I wasn’t expecting what I heard. It’s really good music.”

“It’s a collection of every kind of music,” Wade said. “The CD is five tracks of what we think is the best. It really captures what we think [are] our essential songs.”
Wade said Ponds is the first CD Brothers Gow has recorded in a studio.
“When we record, we set up the instruments in the house, and we just record there,” Wade said. “We took a huge investment by going to a recording studio to work on the tracks. We weren’t too sure what we were getting ourselves into. When we got there, it had everything we needed.”
Carson Church, bassist and vocalist, said the process of making Ponds was a collaboration of the band’s five members.
“It depends on what we bring to the table,” Church said. “I mean, when you bring a song to four other people, it’s like, ‘Well, this part would go really great with this other song.’ So it’s an open creative process that we all bring to the band.”
Rachel Brackett, a sophomore biochemistry major, said Brothers Gow is Flagstaff’s best local band and she plans to go see them again.
“The performance was interesting, to say the very least,” Brackett said. “I don’t really listen to that kind of music, but once they started playing, I got really into it. They had so much energy on stage. They performed a great show.”
Brothers Gow will perform Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. at the Orpheum as an opening act for Bad Fish.

The Brothers Gow totally rock! I saw them on tour in Oregon last summer, which was really lucky, since I don’t get to Arizona much anymore. Flagstaff is lucky to have such talent available. I’ve got to get the new CD!
