Artist: Matisyahu
Album: Light
Genre: Reggae
Matisyahu is probably best known for being a Jewish reggae musician and for his hit song “King Without a Crown,” which was released on his 2006 album, Youth. His newest album, Light, made its release on Aug. 25.
Light sounds like a classic Matisyahu album, filled with sounds of reggae, hip-hop, soft rock and Jewish themes. Most of Matisyahu’s songs are filled with electronic sounds like those of hip-hop. However, these songs are slower and more thoughtful, such as his song “One Day,” in which he sings about the idea of world peace and his hope that children may be able to play without the constant worry of their safety.
The song “Motivate” starts off sounding exactly like that classic rock song you can never remember the name of. It then turns into a fast-paced reggae hip-hop sound with hints of electric guitar here and there.
The ending track, “Silence,” is a beautiful acoustic-sounding song that begins with a type of Hebrew dialect that transitions into English. There is something so elegant about the way he whispers the foreign language that you don’t need to know what he’s saying to love the song.
Light is an overall good album, which gives you insight into the mind of one of Judaism’s finest modern musicians. Matisyahu uses his beliefs to create fun and upbeat reggae music.
