Monsters vs. Aliens made me realize no matter how hard Dreamworks tries, they cannot compete with Pixar in the realm of CGI animated features. The movie lacks the emotional connection between the audience and the characters essential for appreciation of the story, a skill the architects behind WALL-E and Finding Nemo have seemingly mastered.

Furthermore, the movie is far too silly to be funny. B.O.B. is a perfect example of the extreme ridiculousness; he flirts with Jell-O, which is perhaps the most absurd thing I’ve ever seen. However, there were a few moments of more subtle humor I did appreciate, such as when Dr. Cockroach says, “By Hawking’s chair!” Children will appreciate the silly humor, but they won’t understand the references the film makes.

Monsters vs. Aliens substituted heart for banality. Instead of making a poignant, satiric parody mocking the monster movie, the film embraces the plot and character formulas of the genre.

Maybe the next time the movie is watched, sit back, and enjoy the movie for the laughter it should give, instead of criticizing it the entire time.

Just maybe give it a try. A happier person will evolve.
