The title of Astronauts of Antiquity’s second album is misleading. Nothing in Rocket Science for Dummies is about the study of propulsion. Or dummies. Or astronauts.

In fact, this is the most misleadingly heavy album I have reviewed. By heavy, I mean something that makes you go, “Wow, that’s cool,” and then, “Wow, that’s weird.”

It’s as though less talented forms of John Coltrane and Amy Winehouse got together and said, “Let’s jam, except with some electro beats in the background. Hell, let’s throw in some sitars and Hare Krishna choruses too.”

Put it in a mixing bowl, stir and voila, it’s Rocket Science.

While the instrumentals are top-notch, this record doesn’t have the greatest lyrics. A lot of them could be taken from self-help books written by pretend Indian gurus. Since I wasn’t really in the mood for deep-as-a-kiddie-pool conclusions on life’s purpose, I didn’t care much. Fortunately, the melodies are cool enough that I could still be satisfied.

Because musicians capable of seventh chords are not allowed in pop music, you’ll never hear any of this CD on the radio. Still, Rocket Science for Dummies is a solid album for those interested in weird Hindu-based electronica.
