When I drive past Bun Huggers, I can’t help but laugh a little. The name is a bit silly, but what they serve is serious: real charbroiled hamburgers made to order, meaning they make it when you order it. They are hot, fresh and topped with whatever you like.
The interior of the restaurant may seem somewhat dark when you first walk in, but that is only because the inside is painted brown.

Once your eyes adjust to the dimness, you will want to find where to order. The order window is on the opposite side of the restaurant from the door, and is not easy to find.
After being pointed in the right direction, I found myself looking at a large menu board. There were quite a few different choices, ranging from burgers with varioustoppings and sizes to chicken and hot dogs. I decided on a quarter-pound burger with cheddar cheese, French fries and a drink. Next to the order window is another counter with a sign that reads “Fixings and Makings.” This is where all the toppings not cooking with the food live; iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, onions, mustard and so on.
Once my order had been completed, I went to find a place to sit. I found a booth (also brown), and as I took my seat I began to admire the walls, which are covered with all kinds of junk. It is like being inside an I-Spy book. While I was there, I noticed a mail box, tube, tree-cutting saws, a Spanish stop sign, an ore, a door, bed frames, shoes, ski poles…the list goes on and on.
These very interesting decorations provide a nice distraction while waiting for food. Not that you will need much of a distraction, because the food is prepared pretty quickly.
Besides all the junk hanging from the walls, there are also TVs located in all four corners of the building. They seemed to play sports perpetually, which is great when there is a big game going on.
After waiting about 10 minutes or so, my name was called. I paid for my food and moved to fix it up with lettuce and ketchup. The burger was hot and juicy. The cheese had melted and mixed with the delicious charbroiled taste of the burger. The French fries were crispy and greasy — the perfect combination to go with the burger.
Some people complain that charbroiled burgers taste burnt, but this is simply the nature of this type of hamburger. The meat is charred, meaning well-cooked. If this is not your burger of choice, you might want to try one of the other items off the menu. However, if you like your burger well-cooked, then you will probably be very satisfied.
For one burger, fries and a drink, it cost me about $9, which wasn’t a bad deal. The size of the meal indicates that there probably won’t be any leftovers, but this is the kind of food I just can’t imagine being delicious a day later. The customer service is mostly fine, except that the employees seem slightly irritated when you don’t know exactly how their restaurant works.
Bun Huggers is an interesting place, filled with the craziest things you can think of covering its walls. The food is good (if not a little bit commonplace) and reasonable for the price.
