Sound Check: The 88

The 88, a Los Angeles three-piece pop-rock outfit, will release their newest correlative conjunction-titled album, Not Only…But Also, on Nov. 1. The album is currently streaming in its entirety on the group’s MySpace.
The 88 has been around since 2003, and in their rather short career, they have appeared on the soundtracks of a number of famous television shows, including The O.C., Grey’s Anatomy, Greek and Weeds. The group’s music is upbeat and filled with simple keyboards and a steady drumbeat to complete the classic pop-rock sound reminiscent of Maroon 5, but much more intense.
Not Only…But Also begins rather slowly with “Go Go Go,” but picks up some steam through the first couple tracks. Just when you think that is all the album has to offer, The 88 throws you for a loop on track five, “Sons and Daughters,” with passionate vocals and a catchy refrain.
Most of the songs on Not Only…But Also deal with unrequited feelings and falling in love. Lines like, “But there’s no one here who loves you as much as I do. Thank God this much is true,” solidify the notion that this album is lyrically cliché. Still, the excitement and catchiness of the music itself combined with entertaining vocals and a laid-back style makes the lyrical inequality forgivable.
Production and content-wise, this album is 100 percent on the money, with the only irritating factor being the faux-British vocals, which can become a bit tiresome. The vocals do not by any means ruin the album, and for fans of light pop-rock, Not Only…But Also is a sure-fire hit.
